Held each year... The Lightning Ridge Opal Festival is a four-day event that takes place in July each year. The festival celebrates the culture and character of opal mining in Lightning Ridge, and features a variety of activities and events, including: The Opal Queen Ball, a glamorous competition for women over the age of 18 to be crowned the Opal Queen of Lightning Ridge. The Opal and Gem Expo, a trade show and market featuring over 150 stalls selling opals, gemstones, jewellery, and other related products. The International Opal Jewellery Design Awards Association (IOJDAA) Trade Show, a showcase of the latest opal jewellery designs from around the world. Down to Earth Opal Cutting Demonstrations, where you can watch experienced opal cutters demonstrate their skills. Free guided tours of the Lightning Ridge opal fields, where you can learn about the history of opal mining in the area. Live music, street performers, and other entertainment. The Lightning Ridge Opal Festival is a great opportunity to learn about opal mining, see some of the world's finest opals, and buy some unique souvenirs.
