About

Wallaga Lake is the largest lake in southern NSW, situated beneath Gulaga Mountain. The fishing is fabulous, and the peacefulness of the natural surroundings offers a wonderful place for swimming, boating, sailing, water skiing, bushwalking, bird and wildlife watching. Picnic and toilet facilities are available at various locations around the lake. There is various accommodation, including three caravan parks with lakeside camping sites, cabins and boat hire. Beauty Point and Wallaga Lake Heights offer fabulous opportunities for sunset photography, looking west to the Great Dividing Range. Merriman's Island, within the lake, is gazetted as an Aboriginal Place in recognition of its significance to the local Aboriginal people. This island is not accessible to the public, and landings are not permitted. Aboriginal middens and artefacts, such as cutting stones, have been found in the lake area. Wallaga Lake is located seven kilometres north of Bermagui along Wallaga Lake Road.Wallaga Lake is a deep lake, sometimes up to 10 metres and makes an easier boating destination than the nearby Bermagui river. Throughout the lake, you will find dusky flathead (especially in the warmer months) along with bream, trevally, tailor, salmon, and large numbers of garfish. The lake provides mud crabs, blue swimmer crabs and a number of other varieties closer to the mouth of the lake. Ocean and game fishing offer different species depending on the time of the year and ocean currents, but include king fish, marlin, and tuna.
